Voluntary registration with Ofsted: Information and guidance for nannies and families.
Ofsted registration is not a legal requirement for a live in or live out nanny. However, more and more nannies are choosing to register voluntarily, as increasing numbers of families state registration with Ofsted as a key criteria when seeking a new nanny. What can seem a daunting process is quite simple for both prospective nannies and employing families. Here we take a look at the advantages for both nannies and families, of registration with Ofsted.
At Little Ones we have a strict vetting process to select only the very best and committed nannies for placement with families. If as a nanny, you register with Ofsted in addition to our screening process, you demonstrate a high level of professionalism, a commitment to the highest standards of safety and care and early years education. By registering with Ofsted, you show devotion to the development of your skills and experience as a nanny.
Ofsted requires that you have an enhanced DBS check, which is updated periodically, and nanny liability insurance that is up to date. Ofsted also states that you must have a minimum of a level 2 qualification in childcare and current Paediatric First Aid training. This level of proficiency elevates you as a nanny to the highest level of desirability in the eyes of hiring families.
When you decide to go forward and register, you need to do so via the Ofsted Online website. Here you register yourself as 'home childcare' and complete the process. Once the approval process has taken place, around 12 weeks, you will receive your certificate from Ofsted. The cost of registering is £105, with a yearly renewal at the same rate.
You want the very best for your children, and peace of mind for yourself. A nanny registered with Ofsted demonstrates dedication and competence in their profession. Hiring a nanny who is registered with Ofsted also offers advantages for you too. You may be eligible for tax breaks when employing and paying a nanny registered with Ofsted. This new scheme launched in 2017, aims to support families in paying for childcare.
All families who have children under 12 years old, or disabled children under 17, can apply for Tax Free Childcare. If you employ a nanny who is registered with Ofsted then you could save up to £2,000 per year on the costs of your nanny. Ofsted will periodically inspect registered nannies to ensure they are maintaining and developing their skills to the highest levels of professionalism in relation to child care and safety.
With your own instincts combined with our vetting process at Little Ones and with Ofsted, we can all ensure that your children are taken care of by the right nanny, who is highly trained, experienced and committed to the highest level of care for your children.
