A Bilingual Teaching Assistant’s role is to ensure that every child’s individual needs are being met according to the EYFS standards as well as the ESL. They asses the level of learning and care of the children and are the first point of contact for the parents and carers. Bilingual Teaching Assistants support and assist with the student’s different skills, set them appropriate challenges and encourage them to overcome any barriers that they may have to learning. Teaching Assistants ensure that all students reach their full potential by building up their self confidence and encouraging their independence.
Varies from nursery to nursery however most Bilingual Teaching Assistants are trained in ESL and EAL to ensure standards are met. Initial teacher training is required as either a class teacher in a primary school or as a subject teacher in a secondary school.
Salary range:
£15,000 - £30,000
Nurseries will expect at least a GCSe grade “C” in numeracy and literacy or equivalent qualifications. Some nurseries may ask for a childcare qualification such as NVQ or BTEC

Welcome students and parents to the nursery
Contribute ideas to the lesson plans for bilingual leaners
Provide snacks for the children
Contribute to the nursery’s awareness of the needs of bilingual students
Clear away mess form activities
Keep relevant and informative records of the students
Help prepare bilingual and other appropriate learning resources that support the EAL students
Ensure hygiene levels are maintained by helping students wash hands regularly after activities and before meals
Work closely with the other staff

As a Bilingual Teaching Assistant you will usually be working up to 40 hours per week.
