What is the difference between a maternity nurse and a midwife

A maternity nurse is someone who is able to guide you through this process and build your confidence as new parents. A maternity nurse will listen to your requirements and provide you with a bespoke service aimed at supporting you and your newborn, getting you both settled into your new life. Maternity nurses have extensive experience to offer to you and can help with feeding, whether you are breastfeeding or bottle feeding, bathing, changing and settling the baby and taking care of the baby’s laundry and nursery.

Maternity Nurses, encourage parents’ involvement and confidence in handling their new baby and promote a positive relationship between other siblings and the new addition.

A Maternity Nurse will help the mother from the time she leaves hospital until both mother and baby are settled into a routine at home. The reasons why a family chooses to have a maternity nurse can vary from it being their first child to having had a traumatic birthing experience.

A midwife, on the other hand, is responsible for the care of the mother during their pregnancy as well as during the birth. Midwives are known primarily for delivering babies. Much of their job does focus on caring for labouring mothers, managing any complications that arise during the birth or after the delivery of the baby and performing any procedures, such as repairing lacerations, that are needed for postpartum recovery. Whether a pregnant woman intends to have a home birth or a hospital birth, her prenatal care by a midwife will be the same. The woman and baby will be monitored to make sure the pregnancy is progressing appropriately. Midwives also recognize signs of pregnancy complications, such as high blood pressure, which may require treatment. During the birth of the baby, a midwife will deliver the baby and care for a woman and baby immediately after birth. Midwives assess the health and wellbeing of mom and baby. If emergency interventions are needed, such as assisting with breathing, a midwife is there to provide care.

How are the duties of a midwife and a maternity nurse different?

Midwives support mothers through pregnancy and labour and in the time immediately after birth. Whereas a maternity nurse will work with the mothers once the baby has been born and for the first few months of the baby’s life. Midwives work in a range of settings, including hospitals, midwifery-led maternity units and expectant mothers' homes, and are part of a team of professionals and medical staff that includes doctors, social workers, neonatal nurses and health visitors. Maternity nurses’ will work privately for a family within their home and guide the parents through the transition of a new family member.
