There are many different types of qualifications for first aid courses out there, and it can be confusing as to which one you should complete.
There are many reasons why people complete a first aid course. It could be due to the nature of their work, or to just grasp the basics of first aid training so that they are prepared for an emergency situation were one to occur. This would be relevant to anyone who has a young child, or an elderly or unwell relative.
Little Ones has been providing first aid courses to new parents, as well as early years professionals such as nannies, childminders and nursery practitioners, for over 5 years. We believe that basic first aid training is essential for all adults who come into contact with a child, either as a parent or carer, and that everyone should understand the basics of first aid training. That’s why we offer different courses, to suit your needs. Whether you are a parent looking for some basic first aid skills, or a childcare professional who needs to complete a full 12 hour Ofsted approved first aid course.
Little Ones offers 4 different types of first aid qualifications. Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) which is 6 hours, Emergency Paediatric First Aid which is also 6 hours, the full 12 hour, Ofsted Compliant Paediatric First Aid (PFA) and a Basic First Aid Course for New Parents which is a short but important course that lasts 2.5 hours.
Three of our courses fall under the ‘basic first aid course’ name. The difference between a basic first aid course and standard first aid course is the time it takes to complete the course as well as the skills you learn and your responsibilities. With basic first aid training, you will learn how to assess an emergency situation, maintain life and prevent the situation from worsening while waiting for the emergency services to arrive. This is different to a first-aider who has completed an advanced first aid course, who in addition to learning the content from a basic first aid course, should also be able to recognise and diagnose injuries and illnesses, as well as understanding how to administer emergency treatment and life support.
Having completed a course in basic first aid, means that you can be confident and know what to do in any emergency situation.
Emergency First Aid at Work is a comprehensive basic first aid course that will provide learners with a set of skills needed to feel confident in real life situations.
Emergency First Aid at Work is beneficial to the workplace. This course is suitable for people aged 16+ who might need to provide basic first aid by responding to a wide range of accidents, injuries and illnesses that they could encounter in their workplace.
An emergency first aider’s (EFAW) role is to maintain life and prevent the situation from worsening while waiting for the emergency services to arrive.

On completion of this basic first aid training course, the attendee will receive a certificate confirming they have completed the Emergency First Aid at Work course that is valid for three (3) years. This means that if you would like to remain ‘qualified’ in this type of first aid, you would need to refresh your skills and complete this basic first aid training every 3 years.

Everything that is taught via an advanced paediatric first aid (PFA) course and a basic paediatric first aid course, gives you the skills and hands on learning, via resuscitation dummies and equipment to practice. Children grow rapidly, and it is important to know how to administer CPR to different sizes and ages of a baby, infant and child to comply with Ofsted standards in any first aid course.
What is taught in basic first aid training must be a combination of practical, real life simulation, as well as theory based information. This is why providing resuscitation dummies to fit within the different age groups, is imperative due to different techniques that need to be practiced dependant on the size and age of the infant.
All Paediatric first aid courses for childminders, nannies and nursery practitioners, including basic paediatric first aid courses, should be taken face-to-face and follow the guidelines set within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework and Ofsted standards.
The Paediatric Emergency First Aid Course Covers;
With basic first aid training, this helps all early years workers to be prepared for emergency situations and know the steps to be taken to ensure the child/children are safe and action is taken to help them.
Within nurseries, crèches, playgroups and childminder settings, it would be best practice and settings would be awarded the ‘Millie’s Mark’ if all practitioners are trained and have completed at least basic first aid training.
For nannies, it is a requirement by most families that nannies, even if unqualified, have completed at least a basic first aid course.
For all early years workers, certification of any first aid qualification, including the basic first aid course, is valid for 3 years and should be renewed accordingly.
The cost of the basic paediatric first aid course is £96.

The contents covered within any basic first aid course should prepare you for both indoor and outdoor emergency situations. Especially if you work with children.
When administering basic first aid, outdoor first aid should not differ to that given if you are within a home, early years setting or place of work.
For nannies, childminders and early years practitioners, it is a requirement to make sure that all children have access to outdoor learning as well as their indoor play and learning space. This could mean a garden, trips out, or even Forest School experiences. Taking this into consideration, it is important that staff are able to administer outdoor first aid. At least one practitioner should be qualified with an advanced first aid course, however if all staff have completed basic first aid training, then they will be prepared for any emergency outdoor first aid situations.
With the addition of these different outdoor environments, all practitioners should have the responsibility of being able to administer outdoor first aid.
This means being prepared, having access to an outdoor first aid kit, and potentially adding additional contents within your first aid kit to match the outdoor first aid that may need to be administered.
For Forest School environments this could also include working with fire. So your outdoor first aid kit should include apparatus and dressings to help administer first aid to burns and scalds.
Outdoor first aid is important and the basic first aid training you complete should help prepare for these kinds of emergency situations.
The basic first aid course for new parents takes 2.5 hours to complete. This gives enough time to learn the basic skills needed in theory, and also time to put them into practice with resuscitation dummies.
By completing a basic first aid course for new parents, you will get to practice hands-on resuscitation methods on dummies of a baby and a child. This is because the techniques needed to apply CPR are different dependent on the age of the child.
During this basic first aid course, you will learn about;
