What is the difference between a governess and a nanny?

Many families worldwide will start considering hiring someone to help them with their children on a full-time or part-time basis; some of these families will decide the option of hiring a nanny or a governess. Some parents will have a clear idea of which option is the best for their children if it’s a nanny or a governess; this decision might change when the children get older because they will need more help with homework and school subjects.

Other families will hire a nanny and a governess to work side-by-side to cover their children’s needs. In the paragraphs below, we will go through the main differences between a nanny and a governess to help you choose the best option for you.

What is a Nanny?

Nanny is a term that most people will know. They might see this term from their own experience (they had a nanny when they were children), family members, friends or any media communication, like television. Nannies provide childcare at the family home and work as full-time, live-in, part-time or after-school childcarers. In addition, some families will require one-night babysitting. For a higher salary, some nannies may work six days per week. You will find nannies with baby experience up to experience working with teenagers.

Nanny duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • washing and ironing children’s clothes
  • preparation of meals
  • ensuring children’s bedrooms are clean and tidy
  • homework assistance
  • shopping for the household
  • driving the children
  • educational activities, such as teaching a second language
  • arranging play-dates and social schedule
  • planning children’s extracurricular activities
  • keeping the parents informed of developmental progress
  • changing nappies and helping with potty/toilet training,
  • preparing and assisting with bath time and bedtime,

What is a Governess?

Governesses are highly respected and established domestic staff members, trained to the highest standard to provide your children with a tremendously personal level of education. They will usually work with children from five years of age, but some parents searching to give their children specialised instruction from an early age will hire a governess when they are around three years old.

Some of the qualities you can expect from your governess or senior nanny are as follows:

  • Experience and professionalism.
  • Education and social development of the children in your home.
  • Employment from 5 or 6 days per week and may work overnight.
  • Ability to work alongside a nanny or mothers’ help.
  • Care for children, from newborn through to sixteen years old.
  • Proven teaching background or higher education and a minimum of five years of professional experience.
  • Bilingual experience (if required).
  • Social etiquette and cultural understanding.
  • Musical instrument teaching experience (if needed).
  • Homework tuition.

Now that you know what a nanny and a governess are, we should decide on the kind of governess or nanny you can get for your children. You will need to take into consideration:

  • whether you are looking for someone to help you in a temporary or permanent capacity;
  • How long you will need the governess or nanny to help you during the day. Do you need the governess or nanny for only a few hours, or do you need the governess or nanny to assist you from 9 am to 6 pm (for example)?
  • The last question that you will need to ask yourself is: am I looking for a tutor or a nanny? What’s the difference between a tutor and a nanny?

After reading the paragraphs above and seeing that we mentioned governess and nanny in different categories, you probably wonder what the difference is. A nanny will be someone who will be happy to help you with homeschooling and take care of the whole routine of your children, like preparing meals, helping you with bath and bed routine, and making fun activities for your children after-school, and more.

A governess will be someone with experience in instructing and guiding children in their school performance. They will help families with their children's school performances, but they will not prepare meals for them or bath routines, for example. Instead, they will focus all their attention on helping the children with school.

As a third option, you can have someone working as a nanny and have teaching experience to help your children while studying at home.

You can hire a governess to help you after nursery or school, or choose a nanny in a full-time capacity to help with everything relating to your children in temporary or permanent accommodation.

Parents are always looking for the best for their children, even more so when it concerns who will be looking after them, either all day or after school while the parents are working. So you will look for someone positive, funny and a pleasure to have around, but at the same time, an authority figure for your children, someone who will help your children develop their educational and social skills, and much more.

Our consultants will make sure to find the best option for your children and your family. At Little Ones, our expert consultants will help you in your search for a Nanny, Au Pair, Governess, Tutor, or any house staff as soon as you need, in a permanent or temporary capacity.

Should I hire a Nanny or a Governess?

If, after reading the paragraphs above, you are still unsure what the best option is for your children, we will advise you to think about what type of childcare you would like for your children. For example, are you looking for someone who will help your children in their education or someone your children with all the aspects of their day, like meals, bed and bath time?

Another fact that parents might say considerer when hiring a nanny or a governess is the salary they will need to pay them. Nannies usually charge less per hour than a governess because of the type of experience and education; some nannies might or might not have formal education in childcare or teaching, but all governesses will have formal education in childcare and teaching.

Some parents will go for the option of hiring a nanny and a governess to work side-by-side, while others will hire a nanny because they need help with meals, driving and homework. Yet, others will choose the option of governess because the most important thing for them is education. Other families will hire a nanny-governess who will happily cover all the children’s aspects.

Finding the perfect nanny or governess is no picnic. It is easy to get childcare help, but the question will always be the nanny’s capabilities and qualifications. Of course, all parents would agree that they will want someone who has a great personality and character traits because the nanny will be around the children more often.

When finding the perfect nanny or governess, the parents will have to take into account many factors that may affect the hiring process. This includes budget, work schedule, their experience and if they share the same values or childcare perspectives.
