First Aid Courses for New Parents

Are you a parent, or soon to be one? Congratulations! With welcoming a baby into the world, there is so much to think about.

  • Which pram will be best?
  • How many baby grows will I actually need?
  • What do I write on a birth plan?
  • What do I need to pack in my hospital bag?
  • When do I need to put their name down for nursery or school?

One thing for sure is you will be given ideas, opinions and advice here, there and everywhere! Everyone has an idea they like to pitch to new parents about anything from sleeping to feeding. The truth is that every child is different and your focus should be on caring for this new baby and yourselves as new parents.

When you mix in some hormones and feelings of excitement and anxiety, it’s no wonder that for new parents, everything can become a little overwhelming. Making an ‘essentials’ list may help to keep ideas, items and costs together and more manageable.

One item you may not have considered, but should be on your essentials list, is to learn simple first aid skills for babies and children, so you will feel confident to help if an emergency were to arise.

Little Ones has been providing child first aid courses to new parents, as well as early years professionals such as nannies, childminders and nursery practitioners, for over 5 years. We believe that first aid skills are essential for all adults who come into contact with a child, either as a parent or carer, and that everyone should understand the basics of first aid training.

The child first aid course for new parents that Little Ones offers includes hands on training on resuscitation dummies where you will practice CPR skills and how to help a child who is choking. You will also learn about burns, cuts and head injuries, as well as the signs and symptoms of meningitis.

The course lasts 6 hours to provide enough time to learn, practice and ask questions.

What Do I Need to Know?

For new parents, gaining and understanding some basic skills in first aid will really help you to feel relaxed going into this new journey. By acquiring these skills, they should help give you the confidence to care for your new baby and help to keep them safe and healthy.

With child first aid courses for new parents, this may not be something new parents would consider a necessity, however, it is a skillset there to calm you, to help you make sure your child remains happy and healthy, and if any emergency situation arises, you will know what to do to help your child.

Whether it’s a bump, a cut, or something more serious, kisses and cuddles will always be needed, however, to know how to give basic first aid and recognise signs of something more serious, may just save a life.

Children can be a little unpredictable, especially when they are learning new skills and reaching new developmental milestones. By having the basic first aid skills a child first aid course for new parents can offer, means a happy baby, and happy parents!

Child First Aid Courses for New Parents

When considering all the baby classes on offer and all the new equipment you will need to care for your baby, it is also very important to add a child first aid course to that list of essentials.

This can be taken whilst pregnant, or after your child is born. However it is crucial that you complete a child first aid course for new parents so that you will have the knowledge to keep your baby safe and well.

To have the reassurance in your mind that you know what to do in any circumstance should be a high priority and will help you to remain calm and know exactly what to do.

It may sound like another thing to add to your ever expanding and expensive list of the essentials you need for a baby, but to know that you have the knowledge and skills to keep your baby happy, healthy, safe and well, is incomparable.

We feel that all new parents should complete a child first aid course, so it is important that both parents attend, along with any other adults who may be caring for your child. Grandparents, aunties, uncles, nannies. Everyone who has the responsibility of your child should know what to do if an emergency happens.

The prices for first aid courses for new parents can vary depending on whether you wish to attend the child first aid course at the Little Ones central London office or hold a first aid course in your own home. What you Learn on a Child First Aid Course for New Parents

The child first aid course for new parents takes 6 hours to complete. This gives enough time to learn the basic skills needed in theory and also time to put them into practice with resuscitation dummies.

By completing a child first aid course for new parents, you will get to practice hands-on resuscitation methods on dummies of a baby and a child. This is because the techniques needed to apply CPR are different depending on the age of the child.

By completing one of our 6 hour child first aid courses for new parents, you will learn about;

  • CPR for babies and children
  • Recovery Position
  • Choking for babies and children
  • Head injuries (minor and serious)
  • Burns
  • Bleeding (minor and serious)
  • Meningitis

When it comes to children, you should be prepared for anything. To have the basic skills that a child first aid course for new parents can offer, will help you to know exactly what to do in any emergency situation where first aid may be required.

Ages and Stages of Development

Each age and stage will come with its own developmental milestones. And with each milestone, there are risks and safety considerations to take.

When bringing a new baby back from the hospital, it is essential to understand their overall health, understand their characteristics and also know how to watch out for signs of problems such as irregular breathing, meningitis or possible infection. We don’t want to cause panic, however we want you to have the skillset there to recognise these problems.

As a new parent, all of these things can be very scary, but if you have completed a child first aid course for new parents then you will already be aware of the signs and so will understand when you will need to seek emergency care and what to do in that situation.

As children get older and they start to roll around and move you then have the added risk of bumps and bruises and possibly cuts. Knowing how to stop bleeding correctly and bandage up a child, will go alongside the cuddles and reassurance that they will need from you.

When babies are six months they start weaning and with this there may be the potential for choking hazards. Babies are usually moving around quite a lot by this age too and like to pick up objects as well, so knowing exactly what to do in any choking incident is going to be invaluable knowledge.

Children do not understand risks. You are their safety net. The person to keep them safe and guide them on how to keep themselves safe. As they grow, each new milestone will have its challenges, but by completing a child first aid course for new parents, we hope you will gain these necessary skills and use them to their full potential, should the need arise.
